French Merchants

Saint James

Sold out.

The mariner’s sweater dates back to 18th century Brittany from where merchants sailed to England to sell their onions and garlic. These marchands d’ail wore striped sweaters that made them recognizable from a distance and they along with their sweaters became commonly known as chandails. They were later worn by fisherman, members of the French Navy, then weekend sailors. Ours are from a company established in 1889 with ties back to the originals - un symbole authentique de la mer.
